I began my mission just seeking a better option for my son, because I was not satisfied with the public middle school in our district and was having no success using the lottery system here in Columbus, OH. What began as a question of “what options do I have as a mother to ensure my child a quality education?” has led me to a nationwide movement of passionate advocators for educational choice and full education reform.

The Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) was created to “increase access to high-quality educational options for Black children by actively supporting parental choice policies and programs that empower low-income and working class Black families.” This has been their mission since the organization was founded in December 1999. Establishing their first chapter in Milwaukee in 2001, a major victory was celebrated for BAEO when the Ohio Supreme Court decision to implement vouchers was rendered in May of 2002. This established Ohio as one of the mobilization sites. I was directed to the BAEO state coordinator when I called the Columbus City Schools pupil services office. Initially, I wasn’t clear on why I was directed to some one else. I would soon learn that this was one of the best things that could have ever happened.
