A Black teacher in Detroit, Michigan was fired from her job after supporting students who wanted to fundraise money for Trayvon Martin’s parents. Brook Harris, 26, a teacher at Pontiac Academy of Excellence, was educating her students on the Trayvon Martin tragedy when the students suggested they do a fund raiser for his parents.

The school said to have fund raisers regularly where students didn’t have to wear uniform so the students wanted to pay $1 to wear a hoodie instead of the usual school uniforms. When Harris was told that this was not permitted and she was to be suspended she proceeded to explain the news to her students. It was then that she was fired.

Superintendent, Jacqueline Cassel has not given Harris an explanation of her firing and simply stated that the fundraiser would “distract students from academics”.
