Wexner Center For The Arts To Feature Blues Exhibit, Music In Fall Lineup

The Wexner Center for the Arts showcased Annie Leibovitz’s 1979 portrait of the famous Blues Brothers, Dan Aykroyd and JohnBelushi, in her popular photography exhibit last fall. This fall, theWexner Center will be singing the blues.

360650262In its Fall 2013 Preview released Sunday on its website, the WexnerCenter announced the major interdisciplinary exhibition “Blues for Smoke” will be featured in its galleries beginning Sept. 21 through Dec. 29.

The exhibition, whose title is adapted from jazz pianist Jaki Byard’s1960 solo album, will seek “to show how the vitality and innovation at the core of the blues tradition…have served as major catalysts for experimentation in modern and contemporary art,” according to theWexner Center’s website. The work of over 40 artists will be displayed at the exhibit with mediums ranging from photography, painting, drawing and sculpture, to video and mixed media.

In conjunction with “Blues for Smoke,” a variety of jazz combos will be performing on the Wexner Center’s Performance Space, including the Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas Quintet, Mehliana, which is jazz keyboardist BradMehldau’s new collaboration with drummer and percussionist Mark Guiliana, and the Byron Stripling Quartet featuring Bobby Floyd on the Hammond organ.

Other events slated for the Wexner Center’s fall 2013 season include a series of Alfred Hitchcock’s early silent films, a performance by Riverdance star Colin Dunne, a lecture from architect Steven Holl and a conversation with filmmakers Isabella Rossellini and Guy Maddin.

Tickets for these events will be on presale for Wexner Center members from Aug. 1-11. Public ticket sales will begin on Aug. 12. Prices will vary based on the event.  SOURCE
