CLEVELAND – Browns quarterback Jason Campbell laid on his back on the grass near midfield as Will Allen returned a fumble, caused by a hard William Gay hit, to the Browns’ four yard line.

No penalty was called, despite the fact Gay clearly struck Campbell in the head with his arm.

Seconds later, the “Terrible Towels” were waving as Ben Roethlisberger found Emmanuel Sanders in the end zone and the Steelers extended their lead to 20-3 midway through the third quarter.

The strip-sack that ended Campbell’s day was a turning point that left head coach Rob Chudzinski visibly displeased after the Browns’ 27-11 loss.

“I felt like he was hit in the head on that. They [the officials] didn’t feel that way,” Chudzinski said.

Chudzinski was told by the officials that Campbell was hit in the shoulder.

Campbell was carted off to the locker room with a head injury, which Chudzinski said after the game was a concussion. A hit to the shoulder won’t cause that.

Frank Schwab of the Shutdown Corner blog on Yahoo! rightly points out that a similar hit on Drew Brees a week ago was flagged .

For the second time in the game, Brandon Weeden was summoned to action. Campbell also had to go to the sideline in the first quarter after a taking a shot that bothered his ribs, which he injured in the Browns’ last home game against the Ravens.

With only an emergency quarterback and no third-stringer on the roster following the season-ending injury to Brian Hoyer, the Browns may now have to bring in another signal-caller.

“We’ll talk about that tomorrow. We’ll evaluate and see where Jason is. That’s a possibility,” Chudzinski said.

Some of the options with starting experience out on the market: Vince Young, Tyler Thigpen, David Carr, and dare I say it, Tim Tebow.

“Anytime your quarterback goes down, it’s tough,” Chudzinski said. “Whoever the quarterback is next week, we’ll get them ready to play. We’ll go out and guys will rally behind him, whoever it is.”
