Ohio State sophmore defensive end Noah Spence was recenlty suspended by the Big 10 Conference over a failed drug test. It was first thought an illegal supplement was the cause for suspension. According to a report by TV station WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,  more specifics have come to light as to which rule Spence violated.

The report quotes Spence’s father, Greg, as saying Noah tested positive for the drug “ecstasy.” Spence took a drug test prior to the Big Ten Championship game. Spence’s father said his son unintentionally took the drug as he accepted a drink given to him by strangers while at a party.

Greg Spence said Noah’s original suspension was for one year, but an appeal dropped the punishment to three games. A second appeal to the league to reduce the suspension was denied. That suspension began at the Orange Bowl and will keep Spence from playing in OSU’s opening two games of the 2014 season, against Navy and Virginia Tech.

Spence was named to the Big Ten All-Academic team this season while leading OSU in sacks (8.5) and finishing second in tackles for loss (14.5).
