Funny man Gerald Kelly is no stranger to making people laugh. It’s quite possible you’ve even laughed out loud at a few of his hilarious jokes either on the Tom Joyner Morning Show or any of the other comedic stages he’s graced.

It’s kind of hard to miss the lovable New Yorker. He’s been on almost every comedy stage across the country and let’s just say for whatever reason you missed him in your city, a quick look toward the television and we’re almost certain you’ve seen him guest starring on Conan O’Brien, HBO’s Def Comedy Jam or  Showtime at the Apollo.

But it’s what Kelly’s doing next that has brought on an entirely new meaning of hope for the comedian.

Microphones Up Guns Down is a conflict resolution organization that has responded to the gun violence that has plagued our communities over the last several years. Almost like a call to action, one that Kelly says should’ve happened a long time ago.

“My sons and I travel the country and visit schools, YMCA’s and neighborhoods to teach children how use a microphone versus a gun. We want them to be radio personalities, writers and comedians,” he says. “We have a segment called “What Are You Looking At?”. A lot of times kids get in trouble over something as simple as looking at someone. So we do a lot of role-playing to get them to walk away from certain situations.”

Kelly’s sons are eight and 22 years old and are following in the footsteps of their famous father. The comedian even cites laughter as medicine in both the kids he mentors and his own son Isiah, who was diagnosed with ADHD at an early age.

“My son loves it. He tells me all the time, ‘since I’ve been doing “the comedian”, I don’t need my pills anymore’. This is a boy who struggled in every class. He was a good kid, but he struggled. This summer he aced the Math and Comprehension tests,” Kelly said.

A feat that was likely impossible without the avenue that laughter afforded him.

So while the comedian gears up to bring the next installment of Microphones Up Guns Down to a city near you, he’ll be in Atlanta on July 30th at Punchline Comedy Club.
