It’s been nearly 5 years since we lost one of the best songwriters the world of R&B has had the pleasure to know. Nickolas “Nick” Ashford of Ashford & Simpson passed away at age 70 due to complications from throat cancer on August 22, 2011. Tonight we’re honoring him on what would have been his 75 birthday for the Wednesday Night Mini Concert.

Nick and his wife Valerie Simpson were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 It’s safe to say that if there were no Nick and Valerie, several artists that we know as legendary today, may not have had the success they saw if it weren’t for the songs written by this duo.

If you’ve ever jammed to songs like “You’re All I Need To Get By” or “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing,” your well aware of just a few of many hits these two are responsible for. Check out this song Ashford & Simpson wrote that gave Chaka Khan her first hit and was later remade by “The VoiceWhitney Houston…it’s all #LoveAndRnB!
