The Ohio State athletic department will send a proposal to the university’s board of trustees next week seeking approval for a 2,500-seat addition to Ohio Stadium in 2014 that will cost an estimated $9 million and make it the third-largest college football stadium.

Athletic director Gene Smith confirmed the plans to The Dispatch last night.

“We are presenting to the board next week an expansion adding 2,500 seats to the south end zone,” Smith, who is on vacation, said in a text message.

He did not elaborate, but sources said the new seating sections are expected to bridge the gaps over the ramps in the southeast and southwest corners.

The listed seating capacity by Ohio State is 102,329. The expansion would push that to 104,829, ahead of Neyland Stadium (102,455) at Tennessee. Michigan Stadium is the largest in the nation (109,901), followed by Penn State’s Beaver Stadium (106,572).

Plans were approved last year to add permanent field lighting to Ohio Stadium, a $2 million project. Smith said it has yet to be determined whether that project will take place in 2014 or 2015. The Buckeyes will play two night games in the stadium this season, for which temporary lighting will be used. SOURCE
