COLUMBUS, Ohio – Parents of a 3-year-old girl who was shot in the head described on Saturday what happened when their daughter was wounded.

Dionni Branch was hospitalized Friday night after a bullet lodged just below her hairline.

Doctors were keeping her under observation at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on Saturday to make certain her skull was not fractured by the bullet.

The girl’s mother told 10TV News that the child was sitting on her grandmother’s porch when shots were fired on the city’s west side, near the intersection of Palmetto Street and South Hague Avenue.

“I heard like firecrackers, or what i thought were firecrackers,” Dymond Branch said. “And then the next thing I knew, she came up to me holding her head. And it was full of blood.”

The child’s grandmother saw her run into the house, but she did not know why.

“At first, I thought maybe she fell or something. I didn’t think it was a bullet,” said Barbara Hughes.

Another person in the neighborhood said from her porch, she saw the shots being fired.

Courtney Stroud said it was in retaliation to a fight her brother had gotten into with neighborhood kids who had jumped him several months ago.

“We were all just sitting there on the porch. The dudes that they did jump came back by their house pointing guns. And then his friend shot three times,” Stroud said.

Stroud said her brother was taken into custody by police in connection with the shooting. She proclaimed his innocence.

“I’m 1,000 percent sure he did not do it,” Stroud said.

Detectives indicated Saturday night that they had a person of interest in the shooting, but had not filed any charges against anyone. SOURCE
