A young Pit Bull saved his new owner’s 4-year-old son just days after his own rescue. TatorTot, a 10 month old Pit Bull/Lab mix, was on doggy death row when Christi Smith of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota took him in from Ruff Start Rescue in Minneapolis.

Just four days after TatorTot’s rescue, the pup proved just how special he was. In the middle of the night he began barking and running back and forth between Christi and her son Peyton, alerting her that something was wrong. When Christi checked on her son, she realized that he was incoherent and barely breathing, KMSP-TV reported in a news segment.

Christi rushed Peyton to the hospital, where he underwent a series of tests, determining that his blood sugar had dropped dangerously low.

TatorTot’s keen sense of smell probably detected a change in the boy’s body chemistry, veterinarian Isis Sanchez explained to KMSP-TV.

“He is Peyton’s guardian angel,” Christi told the Pioneer Press.

Christi was planning on fostering TatorTot, but now says that he’s going to remain a part of the family.

“I am never going to let this dog go,” she told the paper. “I owe him for the rest of his life.”
