Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. wants to be the mayor of Pensacola, Florida but according to the Pensacola News Journal, he is not eligible for the position.

The PNJ reports:

Escambia County Supervisor of Elections David Stafford says boxer Roy Jones Jr. can’t run for mayor of Pensacola, despite what he told celebrity gossip website TMZ.

TMZ reported this morning that the boxing superstar plans to run for mayor of Pensacola in the upcoming election.

According to the report, Jones has prepared all the necessary paperwork and has attained 5,000 signatures supporting has mayoral run.

Problem is, the self-proclaimed Captain Hook isn’t a resident or registered voter of Pensacola and well, that’s sort of a hard and fast rule if you want to be mayor.

The Pensacola city charter says that anyone wishing to throw their hat into the ring for the mayor’s job must have been a registered voter in the city limits for a year before the filing date for the position ends in June.

Sorry, Roy! Maybe next year you can run.
