Tariqka Sheffey (pictured), a soldier in the U.S. Army, allegedly hid in her car in order to avoid saluting the American flag. She took a selfie, then posted it on her Instagram account with a caption that has ignited a social media firestorm from folks who are demanding that she be booted out of the military, according to Army Times.
Sheffey, whose Instagram name is “Sheffeynation,” posted the following caption under her now controversial photo:
“This is me laying back in my car hiding so I don’t have to salute the 1700 flag, KEEP ALL YOUR ‘THATS SO DISRESPECTFUL/HOWRUDE/ETC.’ COMMENTS TO YOURSELF cuz, right now, IDGAFFFF.”
The young woman’s photo made its way across social media channels and a copy also landed into the hands of an editor at Army Times. Civilians and army personnel have called for Sheffey’s dismal for what many have deemed her blatant disrespect for the American flag–especially since she has taken an oath to defend this country.
As one Facebook commenter stated, according to Army Times:
“Any soldier who refuses to salute the flag is in the military for the wrong reason, and should be removed by dishonorable discharge with loss of all benefits,” one Facebook commenter said. “If they won’t salute it, they damn sure won’t fight for it.”
Sheffey’s commanding officers learned of the selfie via the voluminous complaints they’ve received. Whether or not an investigation is under foot with regards to Sheffey’s photo has not been confirmed. The Army Post spoke to Dee McNutt, a spokesperson for Sheffey’s military post in Fort Carson, Colo., about the young woman’s incendiary photo and she told the news outlet,“The chain of command is aware and looking into the situation. That’s really all I can say at this point.”
Meanwhile, Sheffey has indeed sparked the wrath of American loyalists everywhere, which is evident in the barrage of hate-ridden postings that contain racial slurs and threats.
Sheffey responded to her calamitous situation with a videoed Instagram on Tuesday where she expressed regret but somehow failed to summon up an apology:
“I seriously just want to say thank you to everybody who stood up to me today, like seriously. That s— to me was not that serious. I am not a disrespectful soldier and I really appreciate you all.”
