15 hours and 50 surgeons later, Thomas Manning, 64 is recovering being the first American to receive a penis transplant here in the U.S. Manning was diagnosed with penile cancer in 2012 and the procedure is considered a “surgical milestone”. Today I begin a new chapter filled with personal hope and hope for others who have suffered genital injuries, particularly for our service members who put their lives on the line and suffer serious damage as a result,” Manning said in a statement provided by the hospital. Dr. Dicken Ko expressed that the objective of the surgery is to primarily reconstruct the genitalia so that it appeared as natural followed by urinary function. Manning is looking forward to a new life and new hope after surviving cancer and getting his life somewhat back to normal.
