Retail powerhouse, Kroger announced Monday, February 11, 2019 that it will be closing its doors indefinitely. This abrupt shut down will result in over 400 lost jobs for Kroger employees.

The sweet and fresh smells that have intoxicated the Downtown area of Columbus for 91 years will no longer be available to appreciate. The bakery first opened in May of 1928.

It appears that after a thorough evaluation of the bakery, it was declared that the layout was outdated and the company was no longer able to stay competitive with the age of the equipment.

In a statement made by Kroger, it is clear the shut down is influenced by the competitive nature of the business. “We are in a highly competitive business environment that is driving our company to ensure all areas of our business are meeting their full potential. As a company, we must be able to adapt to the ever-changing retail environment and meet the needs of our customers,” the statement said.

Columbus Bakery employees are to receive their normal pay for 60 days and will have the option of relocating to other Kroger facilities or receiving severance based on years of service.

Kroger has no plans to close other facilities in their network. They plan to sell the property once the bakery is closed.

This is undeniably the end of an era and goodbye to a beloved Columbus city staple.
