Just a couple of weeks ago, newly elected Lori Lightfoot, the first Black woman and openly LGBT mayor of Chicago, appeared to be following Rahm Emanuel’s with a Jussie Smollett obsession. Now after lawsuits from the city of Chicago, attacks on Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx and more whining from the Chicago Police Department, Lightfoot appears to be backing off.

In a statement on Friday, Lightfoot said, “I’m not going to comment on any pending litigation. Obviously, this was a decision that was made by the current mayor, Rahm Emanuel. We’ve got a lot of things on our plate, a lot of pressing issues that are truly affecting people’s lives. This doesn’t rank as a matter of any importance to me.”

Exactly, like how the Chicago Police reportedly lied about attacking a 16-year-old girl.

We also can’t forget how the cops who allegedly covered up Laquan McDonald being murdered have gotten away with no repercussions.

In case you missed, Lighfoot was getting some serious side-eyes on social media when less than 24 hours after being elected she wanted to focus on the charges that were dropped against Smollett.

She told MSNBC, “The State’s Attorney’s office here which made the decision unilaterally to drop the charges has to give a much more fulsome explanation. We cannot create the perception that if you’re rich or famous or both that you got one set of justice — and for everybody else it’s something much harsher. That won’t do and we need to make sure that we have a criminal justice system that has integrity.”

As Kim Foxx said, even if he was guilty, which has not been proven, it’s a class 4 felony, the least serious category, which covers things like falsely pulling a fire alarm in school.

Lightfoot continued, “I believe that everybody is entitled to a presumption of innocence. But I saw — as I’m sure you and your listeners saw — a very compelling case, with video tapes, witness statement and other information that looked like he had staged a hoax, and if that happened he’s got to be held accountable.”

As of now, the City of Chicago is suing Smollett for a half a million dollars. Foxx, who is being harassed by the Chicago Police Department for not putting him behind bars, which isn’t even possible, is calling for Cook County’s inspector general to investigate her office’s handling of the Smollett case.

The Chicago Police Department has dropped the ball from the beginning with their handling of the case. Originally, a police spokesperson said there was no footage of the assailants. Then, hours later, there were two “persons of interest” on video. They also claimed the “Empire” actor “refused” to give the cops his phone, but he did give his phone records. Then the FBI reportedly said the Chicago police “overstated” their Smollett case.

On Jan. 29, while walking to a subway, Smollett claimed two men yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him, investigators told The Hollywood Reporter. They allegedly punched and poured bleach on him while one of the suspects put a rope around his neck. As they fled the scene, Smollett told police they said, “This is MAGA country.”

Smollett has always maintained his innocence.
