Cynthia Erivo is one of the cover stars for Essence magazine’s “Black Women In Hollywood” Issue, and we are not surprised. The actress stunned in the cover photo, clad in a bold, ornate ensemble, exuding excellence and power. She is gearing up to be recognized as a cultural icon at Essence‘s upcoming “Black Women In Hollywood” ceremony, and the honor is well-deserved.
Erivo is the embodiment of a cultural icon. In a short time, the London native made quite a name for herself in the film industry by depicting some of the most iconic characters developed in Hollywood. She portrayed Celie on Broadway in the musical revival of The Color Purple for her acting debut. Soon after, she snagged roles for renowned characters like Aretha Franklin and Harriet Tubman and her recent role as Elphaba in Wicked.
Erivo prefers playing characters with depth, which allows her to go beyond the surface of the character’s personality. “I tend to pick roles that give me the chance to get at the center of who the characters are,“ she said. “When you look at a character like Elphaba, there might be the temptation to just play her as the villain, but I always look for the layers.”
In the article, Erivo continues to expound on her experience as Elphaba in Wicked. The actress stated that she related to the character’s uniqueness and wants other Black women and girls to show up as themselves no matter what. “You don’t necessarily have to wait for someone to see who you are to be celebrated,“ said the singer. “You can be all of who you are—and take the time to discover what that is.”
