Officer Jeronimo Yanez is headed to court on Friday after being charged with manslaughter and two felony counts of dangerous discharge of a fire arm in Minnesota. The officer pulled the car of Philando Castile July 6th and opened fire on Castile, who was in the passenger seat, after Castile told him he was carrying a firearm. Minnesota is an open carry state. Dash cam footage shows Castile making no sudden movements before shots were fired.
“Based upon our thorough and exhaustive review of the facts of the case it is my conclusion that the use of deadly force … was not justified,” Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said in announcing the charges. Yanez can face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
