For many 2018 started out great but for one family new year started out devastating with the first homicide of the year. It was less than fifteen minutes into 2018 for Columbus Police to respond to a shooting on the south east side of town that marked the first homicide of 2018.
Ashley Marie Newman was shot twenty minutes before the new year and succumbed to her injuries after being taken to Grant Medical Center. Newman’s husband, Sean Newman, was arrested and charged with murder soon after crashing his vehicle at I-270 and Alum Creek Drive. According to Sean Newman admitted to a third person about the shooting and alerted the police about the incident.
This is devastating news for Columbus after a record breaking year for homicides in 2017 totaling 143. 1991 was known as the deadliest year in Columbus with a record of 139. Prayers that 2018 will not be another record breaking year.
