Black Music Month: Staci Static Let Her Voice Lead To Her Calling

A staple in the St. Louis Music and Media scenes, Staci Static is an example of following your passion to find your purpose.

This Black Music Month we’re spotlighting the women of The Lou who have been and continue to contribute to the rich musical culture.

Growing up, our mid-day diva Staci Static, was heavily influenced by music. She recalls her house in Jennings, Mo. being filled with the sounds of Motown and attending Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince concerts with her father as a child. She also enjoyed seeing Run DMC, LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys at the teen club and concert venues around the city. In high school, the St. Louis-native later went on to study Music Performance and even experimented in theater, performing in musicals.

Staci Static went on explore radio as a young adult, first cracking the mic in Community Radio under the guidance and mentorship of DJ G Wiz. After becoming a mother, she was side-tracked for just a short while, holding jobs at the local record stores or city government, but she never strayed too far from music.

When St. Louis got a new Hip-Hop station, WHHL (Hot 104.1 FM,) Staci Static took a shot in the dark, picked up the phone and called to show her excitement. Mentioning that she had done radio before, then host Deja Vu asked for an aircheck. Unsure of what exactly that was, Staci sent over recordings of her old show and in 3 days was offered a job on-air!

Developing her own voice and style, Staci Static quickly gained recognition for spotlighting the local music scene by playing unsigned artists and inviting them in for interviews. She says she gets excited to about young people and loves helping them launch their careers.

As a stand-out player in radio, Static Static earned national recognition as the only Radio One St. Louis personality to ever be listed as Source Magazine’s Power 30. She’s on the list with heavy hitters like DJ Khaled, Angie Martinez, Nick Cannon, Big Tigger and Rickey Smiley.

Today, Staci Static contributes to FOX 2’s morning show, hosting a special segment surrounding FOX’s hit drama EMPIRE called, “Cookie Bites.” She and host Kim Hudson dish on all things Empire the day after during the season which she enjoys a lot.

Managing to juggle her crazy schedule as a mother and radio host, she works to keep her babies humble while also introducing them to the finer things in life. It’s all about balance for Staci Static.

The one lesson she’d give a rising woman in music: Stay true to you. Stay focused on your goal and be strategic about placing yourself in position to reach it.
