It was just a few days ago when I realized I had only seen bits and pieces of the original The Thing.  Keeping in mind that the new The Thing served as a prequel to the original, I figured now was as good a time as any to play catch up.  <!–more–> This is not supposed to be a complete review of the original; however, I feel it is important to convey the way I felt during my first complete viewing: WOW!  I’m not a real huge fan of horror due to the lack of quality filmmaking the genre seems to dish out the majority of the time; however, The Thing solidified a whole new hope for not only old horror films, but also to the idea that there may still be hope in this day and age.

Now, it’s important for my readers to understand that I went into the theater expecting to judge the so-called prequel as it stood on its own two feet, as well as a continuing addition to the franchise. Also, I did not want the glory of the original to taint my point-of-view; and after my viewing of the new prequel, I can honestly say I was able to separate the two.  Enter key plot: a giant spacecraft is discovered buried deep in the snowy landscape of Antarctica accompanied with a frozen escapee not of this world.  A team of scientists is dispatched to investigate the findings including our key character Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), serving as a chief excavator.  Our initial problems start after the alien is cut from the ice and the chief scientist orders an immediate tissue sample.  The deep hole combined with the melting of the ice allows the alien to escape and begin its slaughter.  The team soon notices the horrific imitating methods of the alien — giving way to increased paranoia and lack of trust among one another.  Now, if this sounds vaguely familiar to you, then you may be thinking the same thing I am.  Is this the same d*mn movie?
