While I have joked plenty of times about how it won’t be long before Facebook is telling my blood type and preferred brand of hot sauce (Louisiana, if you were curious), there’s something to be said about knowing what you’re signing up for.
That’s something I quickly learned years ago after perusing message boards. People can sometimes be too quick to overshare facets of their lives that probably need to be dropped off in an old shoe box and burned to the ground. Even now when I log on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, I am sometimes perplexed at what people are putting on full display: used condom wrappings, illegal drugs, rants about what a “sorry a** b*tch” their boss is as well as personal and lengthy rants about things that remind me of the last episode of “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta”(which was great, for the record).
It often leads me to wonder: Do you fools know the rest of us can see this?
Some forget, while others know exactly what they’re doing and could care less. They are willing to say whatever to whomever is watching with the hopes of scoring some much-needed attention.
In the case of one Burger King worker, he’s since learned that comes at a cost…and a possibly a paycheck. Yes, the image you see in this post was originally posted on the image-based Internet forum 4chan.org.
The caption read:
“This is the lettuce you eat at Burger King.”
Not that I defend such idiotic behavior, but if you’re going to be a jackass, try not to incriminate yourself by showing the entire world.
Nevertheless, this is what happens when you mess with hackers who like their wraps with crispy chicken — fresh and footless topped lettuce – three cheeses, and ranch dressing wrapped up in a tasty flour tortilla.
While he must have thought this was funny, others weren’t laughing.
According to Hypervocal.com, Anonymous (the notorious vigilante hacking group) used GPS data embedded in the photo to locate the fast food restaurant’s address and reportedly contacted the franchise and FoxNews8.
“Whoever this is is getting fired,” a morning shift manager named Andrea, told the Cleveland Scene.
Wait, wait. It gets better.
Burger King has since issued a statement:
Burger King Corp. has recently been made aware of a photo posted on a social networking site that allegedly shows a BURGER KING® restaurant employee violating the company’s stringent food handling procedures. Food safety is a top priority at all BURGER KING® restaurants and the company maintains a zero-tolerance policy against any violations such as the one in question.
The restaurant where this photo was allegedly taken is independently-owned and operated by a BURGER KING® franchisee. The franchisee has taken swift action to investigate this matter and terminated the employee involved in this incident.
This picture is what got the former Burger King worker unemployed — and for the record, it only took those hackers 15 minutes to track him down. Let this newly unemployed worker’s story serve as a reminder to give thought to what you put online…tell your oversharing cousins too.
