The city of Chicago, Illinois is paying homage to soul legend Chaka Khan by bestowing the icon with her own day. In a July 28th planned ceremony, community leaders and members will make “Chaka Khan Day” official in a commemorative ceremony in the city’s Millennium Park. Khan will also perform a free concert during the outdoor ceremony.

“Chicago is where it all began for me. Even before (joining the band) Rufus, I sang with local groups such as The Babysitters, Lock and Chain and Lyfe. As a young girl, growing up on Carpenter Street, my parents introduced me to a very rich musical foundation – starting with jazz and opera,” Khan said in a statement.

In addition to her own day, Khan will also have a street named after her near her former high school.

She continues: “I owe this city so much, and I’m deeply honored by this tribute. Chicago will always be a part of me, and with this street naming, I now will always be a part of it. It’s a blessing to me and my family. We are profoundly grateful to all the people of Chicago.” SOURCE
