Thousands upon thousand Virginia voters allowed their voices to be heard during the Midterm Congressional elections Tuesday.
Here are the unofficial results in Virginia. The State Board of Elections will certify the official election results by next week. All other reports are just projections.
Democratic United States Senator Mark Warner, Virginia representative, is claiming an extremely narrow victory in his bid for re-election. However, Republican challenger Ed Gillespie says he is not quite conceding yet, adding that he owes it to the voters to find out what the final outcome is. Warner leads Gillespie by just a few thousand votes with nearly all of the ballots counted. Gillespie may demand a recount. However, provisional ballots and absentee ballots must be counted.
On the House side, three Republican incumbents are the easy winners in Southwest Virginia’s congressional races. In the 5th District, Robert Hurt past Democrat Lawrence Gaughan and two other candidates. In the 6th District, Bob Goodlate won re-election, defeating Democrat Will Hammer and one other candidate. In the 9th District, Morgan Griffith accelerated past Independent William Carr Jr.
Congress is beginning to look like this, Republicans are celebrating their best midterm election in a long time. The GOP will control both the House and the Senate for the last two years of President Obama’s term. Republicans flipped at least seven seats to take control of the Senate, including hotly-contested races in Colorado, Iowa, North Carolina, and Arkansas. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to become Majority Leader, trading places with Democrat Harry Reid. Republicans also laced their majority in the House.
And now, President Barack Obama is planning to meet with both Democratic and Republican leaders in the House and Senate for a peaceful gathering at the White House this Friday. More details on the meeting will be forthcoming.
