Director Nelson George has pulled back the curtain on Misty Copeland‘s life and given her fans a new look at her story in his documentary A Ballerina’s Tale.

As the American Ballet Theatre’s first Black female principal dancer, Misty has had a career that few could ever wrap their minds around. After coming to ballet at 13 years old (an age that many pros would consider too old), her natural grace and undeniable talent have propelled her to the forefront of her industry. However, it didn’t come easy to her.

Misty has faced rejection on the basis of her build, and even her race despite what an amazing dancer she is. Given her historic promotion at ABT, George felt it was high time to give everyone a look at what it really took to get her from her first ballet class to taking center stage in shows around the world.

A Ballerina’s Tale is due out in select theaters and VOD on October 14, but you can take a peek at the Sundance Selects film right now.
