Caitlyn Jenner spoke to Ellen DeGeneres on the latter’s talk show about her seemingly halfhearted support of gay marriage in an interview that aired Tuesday. That same Tuesday, DeGeneres spoke to Howard Stern about how she found Jenner’s stance to be confusing.
Among the interview clips that Ellen released ahead of its air date, Jenner offered qualified support of gay marriage, admitting at first, “I mean, I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. And I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it.’” She then said that now, “I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.”
DeGeneres told Stern that she found it hard to understand Jenner’s point of view. “And I said, ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you – this is like, really confusing to people, and you still have a judgment about gay people and marriage.’” This is where Jenner replied that she was okay with gay people claiming the word “marriage” if it was that important to them: “It is, because that’s the word. We want the same thing…” DeGeneres said to Stern in reply to that statement.
