Local Barbershops Doing Their Part To Help Youth Read More!

Barbershops are known for being a space for to not only get a fresh cut, but a safe space for men to have real conversations. Well now at over 30 barbershops throughout Columbus, its a space for boys to read!

Almost two years ago the city of Columbus teamed up with Columbus City School Distract, to join the Barbershop Book Program. This program sets up mini libraries in open sight at barbershops,  encouraging boys to read aloud, which many boys isn’t a privilege they always have at home.

Supreme Cutz Barbershop, is one of 30 shops partaking in this amazing program.

“I definitely think it’s making an impact, cause it encourages the children to read, but the parents to read and the older siblings and uncles and aunts to read with them also. So while they’re sitting in here and have idle time you know, they’re engaging with each other reading books,”  Supreme Cutz owner, Emmett Brown said.

The Columbus Barbershop Book Program has already provided 1,530 books to youths and The Columbus Jewish Foundation has offered to provide funding to help maintain the initiative!
