MISSY ELLIOTT HAS GRAVES DISEASE!

Missy Elliott has revealed that she’s been battling Graves’ disease for the past three years.  Graves’ disease attacks the thyroid gland causing weakness in the muscles, weight loss, bulging of the eyes, mood swings and other symptoms. Missy tells People magazine that the illness came upon her suddenly back in 2008.  Elliott explains:  “I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn’t keep the brake down and almost crashed. I couldn’t write because my nervous system was so bad — I couldn’t even use a pen.”

On the positive side, Missy has responded well to radiation therapy and exercise, so she hasn’t had to take medication in about nine months. Working out has also helped her drop about 30 pounds (although some of that loss may be due to the disease).  But, there’s still no cure for Graves’ disease, so Missy will have to live with the condition for the rest of her life.

Missy will open up about her medical situation on VH1’s Behind the Music, next Wednesday, June 29, at 10 PM on VH1.
