A 6 month old baby girl is dead after being shot multiple times while her dad changed her diaper. The father is in critical condition at a Chicago hospital. This latest shooting comes months after her 21 year old mother Judy, was hit by a gunman when she was pregnant with Jonylah.
Her family said Mrs. Watkins was hit in the knee when she was eight months pregnant as she walked home with a group of women. SMDH!
Back to the present, Jonylah Watkins was shot five times and endured more than five hours of surgery Monday afternoon and into the evening. Relatives kept vigil at the hospital Monday night, praying that Jonylah would recover from the gunshot wounds…but her little body couldn’t take the trauma.
Cops say the window was shot out in the vehicle where the baby and her father were sitting when a gunman opened fire. Police say he was changing her diaper. Jonylah’s grandmother got a call moments later. “She said there was some shooting on the block so I ran over there,” Mary Young said.
Jonylah and her 25-year-old father, Jonathan Watkins, were each shot multiple times. Police say he has gang affiliations with the Gangster Disciples. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition. “Our whole focus has been the baby,” said Rev. Corey Brooks, New Beginnings Church. “We have no idea why the shooting happened, we don’t know who was responsible for it.”
Police say after firing the shots, the gunman ran to a waiting car and sped off. Anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes was in the neighborhood a short time after the shooting handing out flyers and looking for witnesses. “This is a small child, this is borderline for that baby. I’m hoping someone will have a heart and pick up the phone,” Holmes said.
“I just want whoever did this, it was very cowardly, and to turn himself in,” said Young. Pastor Brooks said his church is donating $5,000 to add to a reward to help find the suspect who may have been the shooter.
As of Monday night, police said they have no one in custody.
