During the latest probation hearing for singer Chris Brown, doctors testified that the troubled singer’s past history of violent behavior is due to previously undiagnosed bi-polar disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and recommended that he stay in rehab, reports People Magazine.
Though a probation officer wrote to the court that Brown has responded well to treatment and is learning to employ healthy methods of dealing with stress, he also suggested that the singer remain in rehab until at least November as a precautionary measure.

[Brown] reports to a highway cleanup labor crew in Los Angeles three days a week to fulfill the 750 hours of service remaining in his probation requirements, the report said. At that rate, Brown could complete the labor in mid-October and possibly be free from probation requirements by the end of the year.
His legal troubles began five years ago when he beat then-girlfriend Rihanna in a rented Lamborghini on a Hollywood street. He pleaded guilty to felony assault in June 2009, which resulted in a sentence of five years of probation and 1,400 hours of community labor.
The judge has revoked Brown’s probation twice in the last year, most recently because of his arrest on a sidewalk near the White House after allegedly punching a man.
Brown voluntarily entered a rehab program a day after being released from a Washington jail in October, but he was kicked out a few days later for “throwing a rock through his mother’s car window” after a family session at the center, a probation report said. Brown was upset because his mother said she wanted him to stay in treatment, the report said.
“Mr. Brown preceded to walk outside and pick up a rock and threw it through his mother’s car window and it shattered,” according to letter from the rehab center included in the probation report.
The letter further states that Brown needs to be under a doctor’s close supervision “to ensure his bipolar mental health condition remains stable. It is not uncommon for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and Bipolar II to use substances to self-medicate their biochemical mood swings and trauma triggers. Our clinical team believes Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, Black Americans are “more likely to experience a mental disorder than their white counterparts” but “less likely to seek treatment.” Men are less likely to seek treatment than women, particularly in the Black community, because of the stigma attached to seeking help and the fear of being perceived as weak.
Brown goes to court for the Washington incident on April 17 with another probation hearing scheduled for April 23.
