Craig Spencer

The doctor did not have a fever until after he got back to NYC and went out in public before contacting the Health Department.  The city is now “on heightened alert.”

(CNN) – A New York City doctor is in isolation after testing positive for Ebola.

He just returned from West Africa, where he worked for Doctors without Borders. Officials say Dr. Craig Spencer had no symptoms until Thursday, when he was rushed to the hospital before that – he was out and about in the city, riding the subways, and bowling, among other activities.

The first positive case of Ebola in New York City drew a call for calm from Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“We want to state at the outset there is no reason for New Yorkers to be alarmed,” he said.

He reiterated at a Friday, Oct. 24 news conference that there is no cause for alarm.

“Ebola is a hard disease to catch,” he said.

The 33-year-old Spencer is in isolation at Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital, one of eight hospitals in the state designated to treat Ebola.

Spencer returned to New York after treating Ebola patients in Guinea last Friday, though doctors say he was not symptomatic until Thursday, Oct. 23.
