Hmmm…Mount Carmel Health System will now give discounts to self-paying patients. They are not the only ones, other hospital systems said they already have been providing discounts.

According to 10TV, Central Ohio residents who lack health insurance and pay their own way for health care no longer must pay full “retail” prices at local hospitals under any circumstances.

To comply with new Affordable Care Act rules governing the billing and collection practices of nonprofit hospitals, Mount Carmel Health System acknowledged that all of its self-pay patients now receive discounts for care.

“As of July 1 (2014), all self-pay patients receive a discount, whereas previously it was on a case-by-case basis,” said John O’Connell, Mount Carmel’s director of customer service.
