With all the violence happening in the city, new laws may help make the streets more safe. According to Fox 28/ ABC 6, an Ohio state representative is hoping to change the laws when it comes to nuisance abatement after police in Central Ohio say they’re having troubles shutting down after hours clubs plagued with violence.

Officers arrested the operators of the La Rue Banquet Hall off Karl Road overnight Friday. Demetrais Miller, Mariellen Calloway, Tyshajuan Calloway and Sir Pegue will face a judge Saturday on misdemeanor charges of operating this type of establishment where alcohol is illegally sold.

Since last January, police say they responded to four shootings at La Rue’s including the murder of a man who came out of the club last month.

Officers say there have been a string of assaults, a reported rape this month, signs of prostitution along with the production of pornographic movies.

Officers say they were also able to obtain evidence this month that club staff is selling alcohol inside without a liquor license and that’s when a judge approved a board up order for the establishment.

Rep. David Leland says he will work to change the language in the nuisance abatement law to include the term “pattern of violence” so that board up orders and civil suits won’t stem from illegal alcohol sales and lewd activity alone.

Rep. Leland says he’ll work to gain bipartisan support for his proposal before taking it to the state house floor.
