PHILADELPHIA- An 8-year-old boy became the first recipient of a double hand transplant after an illness forced doctors to amputate his arms and legs.

At 2 years old, Zion Harvey had a sepsis infection. The boy’s arms and legs were removed, and he underwent a live transplant to save his life.

“When I was 2, I had to get my hands cut off because I was sick,” Zion told a reporter with KYW in Philadelphia. “Some of my classmates they don’t mean to say mean things to me.”

“He’s amazing in his own right, for me it’s a blessing. I’ve been blessed with a godsend, an ange,” said Zion’s mom, Pattie Ray.
