According to Fox 28, a Houston area sheriff’s deputy killed in cold blood. Tonight, investigators say they have the man responsible for the death of deputy Darren Goforth. Investigators say Shannon Miles shot Goforth at a gas pump, then stood over him, shooting him several more times.

Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman says authorities charged Miles with capital murder. “We have not been able to extract any details regarding a motive at this point.  As far as we know, deputy Goforth had no previous contact with the suspect.  It appears at the outset to be clearly unprovoked,” Sheriff Hickman said.

The 47-year-old deputy was getting gas last night, when investigators say Miles came up to him from behind, shot him several times, then continued to fire after Goforth hit the ground.  Miles then drove away without saying a word. “Our assumption is that he was a target because he wore a uniform,” Sheriff Hickman said.

An intense manhunt covered Harris County for hours late last night and into this morning. Deputies took Miles in for questioning and he was eventually arrested. “The weapon was recovered and ballistics tests indicate it is the match,” Sheriff Hickman said.

Miles has been arrested for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct with a firearm and trespassing, but nothing like this. “It gives us some peace knowing this individual is no longer at large and he wasn’t somebody that would be targeting the rest of the community,” Sheriff Hickman said.

Goforth was a 10 year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, assigned to patrol.  He leaves behind a wife, who is a school teacher, and two children.
