The XXXI Olympiad commonly known as Rio 2016, was inspiring to so many all over to the world.  While most of us got motivated to get off our butts and get active Columbus native Marc Thomas took his insertion in an artistic direction.

Thomas began painting in the second grade and went on to paint while studying at Whitehall Yearling and Fort Hayes High Schools and has been painting off and on since.  He was inspired by African American artist Jacob Lawrence who also painted an Olympic series for the Munich Games.  Thomas series is called Olympic Abstracts and is 27 pieces in the form of urban abstract expressionism captivating the Rio games through his eyes.

The arts have always been a great escape & a great peace for me. Growing up in bad circumstances; the arts bring me a sense of great comfort as I’m able to paint my soul free. I also like painting and telling a story through my works. I only paint what I call “happy art” that takes you down memory lane. I paint to evoke emotion. – Marc Thomas

All 27 pieces of Thomas’s Olympic Abstracts can be seen below or on his Facebook page and are availabe for purchase.  You can also reach Thomas via email here
