San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem before his game against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night, continuing his silent protest against racial oppression in the United States. But at least this time he wasn’t alone, as teammate and 49ers safety Eric Reid took to the ground next to him and joined his quarterback in receiving several boos from the San Diego crowd.

Perhaps fittingly, the final preseason game for both teams was also San Diego’s “Salute to the Military” night, guaranteeing an especially cold reception from the Southern California fans. Kaepernick had a military guest of his own on the Niners’ sideline, as he invited former Green Beret and NFL long-snapper Nate Boyer to the game after reading Boyer’s well-received letter posted earlier in the week.
