Birth Of A Nation is easily one of the country’s most anticipated films of the year. Nation tells the story of slave and preacher, Nat Turner (Nate Parker), who uses his preaching to calm unruly slaves. One he notices the atrocities against himself and his fellow slaves, Nat orchestrates an uprising in hopes of leading them to freedom.

Aunjanue Ellis talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about her role in the film as Nat’s mother, Nancy and sheds a little light on the historic film.

“It’s so important to me that people see this. I’m from Mississippi. In the early 60s people were waging war with the police and the KKK. The police and the KKK were the same thing. We’ve always had these rebellions in our history and people just don’t know about it,” Ellis said.

Birth of a Nation is in theaters Friday, October 7th. Click the link above to hear the entire interview.
