New Orleans began removing statues of four prominent Confederate monuments early Monday. It happens coincidentally two days before the old southern holiday Confederate Memorial Day.

Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis will be removed in later days. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said it is time to take down these statues that don’t “represent us.”

There’s a better way to use the property these monuments are on and a way that better reflects who we are,” said Landrieu.

New Orleans for decades has been majority African American. It’s about timing the south leave behind the flags, statues and symbols that celebrate racism, slavery and treason.
