Students turned their backs and chanted while the Secretary of Education spoke in planned speech by the University for commencement exercises this morning. Bethune-Cookman President Edison Jackson took a moment to step in to say “Your degrees can be mailed to you if this behavior continues.” As soon as the speech began people weren’t having it, take a look :
DeVos came under fire in February after stating HBCU’s were established out of “school choice” and not because blacks were not allowed to attend public colleges:
“They started from the fact that there were too many students in America who did not have equal access to education,” she wrote. “They saw that the system wasn’t working, that there was an absence of opportunity, so they took it upon themselves to provide the solution. HBCUs are real pioneers when it comes to school choice.”
Since it was announced last week that DeVos would be the commencement speaker lots of students and alumni has spoken out against this decision.
