COLUMBUS, Ohio —

Gunfire rang out in front of a Columbus elementary school Friday as a school employee was robbed.

The robbery happened just before 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Seibert Elementary School located at 385 Reinhard Avenue on the South Side.

Columbus police told NBC 4 the school secretary was sitting in her car talking on her cell phone when a man opened the car door, displayed a handgun and told her to get out.

The suspect backed the victim’s car into a house, breaking the right tail light as he left the parking lot.

Initially, the victim told police that shots were fired, but police could not find evidence of gunfire.

No one was injured in the incident.

Students were not at the school when the crime occurred, but students were kept inside Friday as a safety precaution.
