(RNN) – An announcement from the Pentagon is expected this week on plans to lift the ban on transgender individuals serving in the U.S. armed forces, according to a news report.

The Associated Press reported the military would have six months to determine the impact and work out details, based on statements from unnamed officials. During that time, transgender men and women would not be able to join.

The officials spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about it publicly.
