Iyanla Vanzant is one of the best teachers I’ve had the chance to learn from. In 2013, I heard her live for the first time at Oprah’s Lifeclass in Chicago while sitting front row in the studio audience for the Daddyless Daughters episode. Her energy and life lessons are priceless. It is truly a life changing experience to be in her presence. Below is a picture I took of her from my seat. After snapping the picture, she asked me to tag her in my Instagram post.
On Saturday I had the chance to get my life fixed while she was in Cincinnati as the keynote speaker for Radio One’s Women’s Empowerment. Since I believe knowledge is power and I live by the idea that when you know better, you do better, I decided to share the golden nuggets she dropped on me. Below are some notes about a woman’s role depending on what “clan” she is in.
Women in their 30’s; These years are about mothering and being a wife. During this time your job is create, beautify, nurture and teach.
Women in their 40’s: These are the years that you become a woman. Your gift is power. These years are about what’s in your heart and your true being, not about your beauty. By this time in your life, you have learned to pray.
Women in their 50’s: You should be standing in your success. You are wise and have some lessons behind you.
Women in their 60’s: You are the elders. You have done your work, so stop working and start living. You should just be sitting in your majesty.
Iyanla’s message was that ‘You Matter.’ What you do matters. What you think matters. How you respond matters and how you spend your time matters. You should set boundaries and learn discipline in your life.
If you ever get a chance to hear her in person. Please do so! I promise that you will never be the same.
After she hit the stage, she posed and allowed me to take a picture of her. It was like a full circle moment. See picture below.
Be sure to follow me on Instagram and Twitter for videos and more pictures from Radio One Cincinnati’s Women’s Empowerment. I also had the pleasure of being a panelist for a discussion sponsored by Procter & Gamble on Black beauty in the media. I’m pictured below in the green, on the far left.
