Straight Outta Compton

If you are not hip to N.W.A and “gangster rap” during the late 80’s and the 90’s, this movie will get you all the way together. Straight Outta Compton is about 5 young men who use their experiences from the hood to create brutally, in-your-face rhymes that would ultimately shock the world. Together, they formed the world’s most dangerous rap group, N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes.) The name of the group alone let the world know that they simply didn’t care about what was politically correct. Their lyrics, style and attitudes pushed the envelope of the music industry’s boundaries and set the tone for some of the best music to ever come out of the West Coast. Straight Outta Compton takes you on a musical journey, with many twists and turns that will make you laugh, cry and remember why this music was so important to hip-hop.

I am originally from California and lived there during the time N.W.A came out and the L.A. riots. I was young, but I remember my sister had the N.W.A tape and she played their songs all the time. I saw police brutality going on in my neighborhood. I could understand the anger and rage that was rising up in our communities and for once someone (N.W.A) was unapologetically shining a light on what was really going. This movie is raw, honest, edgy and well written. It gives a great depiction of how N.W.A started, the drama that unfolded and how these young men demanded their spot in history.

I left the theater a proud Cali girl. I give this movie a straight 10 outta 10. I believe it is an instant classic. I will watch it again and again. Go see it!
