According to ESPN, The Ohio State University’s running back Ezekiel Elliott said he wasn’t aware his driver’s license had been suspended, an issue that resulted in citations tied to his minor car accident before the team’s departure for the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl.
In his first public comments since the incident, the star junior said he is in the process of resolving the issue. He lost control of his vehicle and crashed at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday on his way to the seventh-ranked Buckeyes’ practice facility.
“First and foremost, I wasn’t aware that my license was suspended, and I mean, I’m doing everything I can now, my dad is doing everything he can now to get that handled and get my license back in good standing,” Elliott said Tuesday morning. “Just honestly glad that nobody was majorly injured, everybody was all right, and I feel like that’s the most important part. It was a scary situation, really just trying to put it behind me and focus on this game.”
The Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year will be available that game on Friday against No. 8 Notre Dame, since he’s neither facing discipline from the program for the citations or dealing with any injuries as a result of the accident.
According to Franklin County court records, Elliott was previously cited for going 59 mph in a 55-mph zone on May 13. After failing to appear in court and not paying his fine, the bureau of motor vehicles referred him to collections and blocked his registration on Dec. 3 — though Elliott indicated he wasn’t aware of those actions.
