The San Francisco 49er’s have announced a change in the starting line-up and with QB Alex Smith nursing a shoulder sprain, the 49er’s have announced that QB Troy Smith would be named the starter for this weekend’s game against the Denver Broncos. Alex Smith is expected to miss  two to three weeks.

This move signals that perhaps the Niners have lost faith in David Carr and Troy Smith was the third string QB on the Niners roster.  Niners head coach Mike Singletary said he has spoken to David Carr and that Carr “Understands” why the team went with Troy Smith.

The Niners acquired Troy Smith prior to the start of the season on September 6th.

Says Singletary, “I think for where we are, I think Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win games”. Well, something had to change, the formula for the first seven weeks wasn’t all too successful.

The San Francisco 49ers play The Denver Broncos this Sunday in London, England.
