Vikings Peterson

When news of Minnesota Vikings’ Adrian Peterson (pictured below) broke about the severe whipping he gave his 4-year-old son, he defended his actions as those of a Dad who cares. Now the gridiron player’s mom, Bonita Jackson (pictured), has stepped forward to defend her son’s mode of corporal punishment as something that was not only done out of love, but out of discipline, according to the Houston Chronicle.

After Peterson was arrested on charges of injury to a child that stemmed from beating his son with a switch, he released a statement through his team apologizing for the hurt he inflicted upon the young boy. At the time, the 29-year-old NFL running back said how the form of discipline he carried out on his child was also used on him when he was growing up.

Jackson reportedly admitted that she, too, used harsh forms of corporal punishment to keep Peterson in line as a youth, with switches and belts, and defended her strict disciplining methods, “When you whip those you love, it’s not about abuse, but love.  You want to make them understand that they did wrong.

Peterson’s September 11th indictment by a Texas Montgomery County grand jury has stirred up lively debates across the country on the use of corporal punishment on children. The young player has been harshly criticized — and commended — for his method of punishment. Either way, Jackson feels that her son is being falsely labeled and cruelly portrayed in the media, stating, “For the most part ,he is trying hard to be a good parent. He’s working at it.  People are judging him, but they don’t know his heart. This was never his intent.”
