Ohio BMV Warns Drivers: Don’t Fall for This Text Scam

If you’ve gotten a sketchy text saying you owe a traffic ticket and need to pay up or lose your license…don’t panic, and definitely don’t click anything.
The Ohio BMV is warning folks about a scam making the rounds via text message. Scammers are posing as the BMV, claiming you’ve got an unpaid ticket and threatening license suspension if you don’t pay immediately.

But here’s the thing: it’s fake. Totally made up. And the BMV says they will never send you a text demanding payment or asking for personal info.
“If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,” said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman in a statement from the department. “Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.”
This scam isn’t just hitting Ohio, it’s popping up across the country, so don’t let the official-sounding language fool you.
If you’ve gotten one of these texts, report it to the Federal Trade Commission. And, if you think you may have accidentally handed over info, call your local police or sheriff’s office right away.
